Happy Monday and a very Happy New Year, lovelies! How was your weekend of saying au revoir to 2011 and welcoming a fresh 2012? We enjoyed it immensely and we're really looking forward to unveiling the new Weddings look and our concept here very soon. Until then, stay tuned for our advice and planning tips and some eye candy, and also hop over to our Lifestyle blog for daily original ideas for the home, entertaining, and recipes. It's quite lovely over there, if we can say so ourselves! We can't wait to unveil what we're up to!

Today we're chatting about a question that nags at a number of brides: how to dress up {or down} their aisle. Flower petals are one of the simplest ways and most cost-effective ways to dress up an aisle. Especially when outdoors, it nods to Mother Nature and can play into your wedding color story so well. While aisle runners can serve their purpose for certain occasions, clusters of sweetly scented rose petals and blooms can make their mark. When plotting to use petals to commemorate your sashay down the aisle, be sure to take into consideration the wind factor. No matter whether you're walking down a grassy aisle or one that's hard like concrete or a dock, soak your petals so that they have a weight to them when place. Place in large clumps in really thick lines and they shouldn't go anywhere.

We hope you've enjoyed our week of New Year's Eve-inspired goodness. From the festive Royale Resolution to the {amazing!} Three Little Pigs dessert and our entertaining tips, we wanted to inspire you for the mark of a new year. Here's us tipping our hats and saying thank you so very much for being part of making 2011 wonderful and what it was.

It was beyond fantastic but sure, it was not a necessarily easy year for us all and was peppered with incredible highs and a few difficult points and challenges loss and hurdles, but we made it out as we like to think we always do: stronger and wiser and with bright eyes.

It was the year of feeling some pressure but being oh-so grateful. We were named Top 50 to Watch by San Diego Magazine, and we hope those watching enjoyed our steps and leaps. It was the year of amazing {seriously amazing} press and projects and mentions. From numerous stories in BRIDES, a three-page spread in Bridal Guide Magazine, Seattle Metropolitan Bride and Groom, to Exquisite Weddings and dozens of blogs like Style Me Pretty and countless magazines, we sure felt the love. We also started an entertaining column for San Diego Magazine where we designed and photographed our monthly ideas for celebrating at home. Boy, we've been working hard to bring our A game and to inspire and make people happy.

It was also the year for relaunching our Lifestyle blog, to some incredible applause and readership. In just over 5 weeks we've amassed nearly 6-figures of unique visitors. W.O.W. Thank you immensely. We hope to continue to inspire. To make you smile. To give you ideas for your daily life and home and for entertaining. We will be working on relaunching our Weddings blog as well with a new look and new features so that we can continue to inspire on that platform. {If there's anything you want to see us doing, please let us know. We'd sure love to hear from you.}

But the relationships we've cultivated this year are most important to us. The network we've developed on Twitter and Facebook is beyond incredible. Our fantastic readers are the absolute best. Our industry friends support and inspire daily. The amazing clients we've had and been able to celebrate with mean the world. The events we've had the honor of bringing to life give us inspiration and fuel to do what we do. Most importantly, the time we've spent with our family and the incredible, undying support we have from them, and the joy and laughter they bring us is unmatched. We couldn't do what we do without you all. Being sounding boards for ideas and concepts, commenting and scooping up multiple copies of each magazine we're in, and just being so spectacular means the world and keeps us grounded. Thank you all for being the absolute best.

We hope in 2012 you'll be right back here with us as we start a new adventure of a year and a new journey. We have some magic up our sleeves that we can't wait to unveil. Sure, we'll greet the new year with smiles and excitement but also with the anticipation of challenges and hurdles. Those never stopped us before.

We hope to make Valley & Co. stronger and better and can't wait to get to work on some exciting projects and ideas we have brewing. We'll continue to bring unique and original daily inspiration, tips, and photo shoots and recipes. We'd love to encourage you to leave your feedback on comments on what you enjoy and what you'd like to see {you do have to click on each post individually to do so}. 2011 Moments: Rockin' Fun

While we kicked off 2011 with a beautifully chic downtown wedding, the following weekend we switched gears and planned and designed a rockin' mod 50th birthday bash that was a total surprise. It was at the Grande Dame of Seattle, the Fairmont Olympic Hotel, and it was just way too much fun!

What we loved: the beautiful color palette, hand-painted details from Momental Designs, the funky vibe mixed with elegance, and the surprise!

Oh...and the face painting! What an excellent activity that made everyone smile.

2012 Wedding Trend Prediction No. 7

It's that time: we're rolling out the last of our 2012 predictions for weddings. Oh where did 2011 go?

Wedding Trend Prediction No. 7: the rise of couture gowns in the form of collection. We have some favorites from Seattle designer Luly Yang that we featured a few months back. She's created her amazing Luly Blue and Luly Yang Diamond collections after being inspired by the Palace of Versailles.

2011 Moments: La Jolla Romance

It's that time, friends. We're winding down the year that was and looking forward to the year that will be with bright eyes and anticipation. We're also looking back on some of our favorite moments from 2011. The happy couples. The funny toasts. The beautiful bride walking down the aisle. The wonderful details that represent our couples.

We'll start with Katie + Brad. Amazingly sweet couple who we like to consider friends now {love when that happens!}. They tied the knot in La Jolla on the Royal Wedding date, though they technically sent their save the dates out first. :)

2012 Wedding Trend Prediction No. 6

Oh, friends! We're just days away from Christmas and New Year's Eve. Can you believe we're wrapping up 2011 in all its wonder {both fantastic and challenging at times} and rolling out the sparkling red carpet for 2012? How fantastic. We're so excited for what 2012 has in store thus far: amazing weddings and events and some writing...shall we say assignments and ideas that have us so eager for the pages of the calendar to turn.

We're also counting down the last of our 2012 wedding trend predictions {last week gave us prediction No. 5}.
2012 Wedding Trend Prediction No. 6: handmade wedding favors. These needn't be over-the-top or expensive, but your guests will adore the personalized touch. Perhaps it's because we're in the jolly holiday spirit, but handmade ornaments top our list right now {like our mossy-filled ornaments}. They can change with the seasons and truly mean something each season they're unwrapped {think sea shell-filled, glittering baubles, or sand from exotic locales. Other handmade gifts: gorgeous textured paper-covered coasters, personalized embossed luxe stationery, or sweet treats made from your home. Who wouldn't enjoy some gourmet candies or cookies from a passed down recipe?

DIY Wedding Goodness: Leafy Coasters

Dear wedding blog pals, we're happy to have you visit today! While we're amidst holiday goodness {cue the mistletoe, scented pomanders, decadent cocktails, and family} we're also busy plotting for winter weddings and gorgeous springtime soirees and nuptials. Many of the details we're proposing and planning on are handmade with a gorgeous impact. Over on our Lifestyle blog we're showcasing Holiday DIY Week and our leafy Italian ruscus coasters can be the perfect way to dress up your cocktail tables or place settings at your wedding. They'd also look beautiful on a springtime table or at a tea party luncheon.

You'll need: Italian Ruscus branches that can be purchased at your local floral wholesaler {other tiny leaves from your yard could work if you can't find these} | metal lids from frozen juice cans | hot glue

Pluck the little leaves off of the Ruscus branches and make a neat pile {each coaster takes up to 20 leaves}. Make a line of glue 1/2 way around the rim of the lid and place leaves on under another fanning them out.

Continue the glue line on the remaining half of the lid and finish the leaves off with the last one sitting on top to close any "seam" you might see.

Then sit back and gawk at the gorgeous holiday project you've just made!

Beautiful, aren't they? They'll last about a week or so {longer if you store them in the refrigerator while not being used} so you can make these in advance and bring them out fresh at your bash {cue the oohs and aahs!}.

Top them with festive little cocktails {we'll be sharing our holiday cocktail recipes next week!} and it's an instant party!

Monday. What happened to the weekend? We hope yours was one filled with hot cocoa, tree trimming, and festive cheer. Yes, we're in full-board holiday mode! As we nudge closer and closer to Christmas we're excited to welcome a handful of our pals to lend their holiday must-haves this week. You're in for a real treat! Without further adieu...

Hey there! It's Chris from Postcards & Pretties and I'm so happy to be here on Valley & Co. Today I'm going to share with you eight of my holiday must haves. Let's start off with...

1. Little Black Dress - I'm a big fan of little black dresses but sometimes they can be a bit boring. I love this dress with its polka dot overlay. Where's the party?

2. Sparkly Ornaments - One year I purchased some ornaments on clearance. I kinda went overboard with the quantity and was the proud owner of 40+ ornaments that didn't work with my tree. Christmas time rolled in and I attached an ornament to my gifts and did that for two years. The following year, I'm all out of ornaments and didn't attach any to the presents and a few friends and family members wondered if the ornaments fell off the present because they were looking forward to them. So needless to say, I find myself purchasing a new ornament for each of my gifts every Christmas now.

3. Sonhos de Abobora or Pumpkin Dreams - Forget fruitcake! These delicious pumpkin doughnuts are a Christmas staple since I was a child. My mother still makes them every year with us {my sister, niece, nephew and I} hovering over her waiting for them to be sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.

4. Hot Chocolate - Jersey winters are pretty cold and I always find myself drinking lots of hot chocolate during this time a year with extra marshmallows of course!

DIY Silver Glitter Ornament

Hi friends! Happy Thursday. Did you watch the Rockefeller tree lighting last night? What a magical time of year. Glittering tinsel, trees with the warm glow of globe lights, and packages wrapped up so pretty...le sigh. We just love the holidays. We've been serving up a number of original recipes and DIY projects on our Lifestyle blog {it has a brand new look!} and we really wanted to share this with our Wedding readers as it can make for the perfect bridal shower project or winter wedding gift.

From Lifestyle: Nothing says festive more than handmade goodness to gift to others this season. We're excited to fill an Etsy order of our sea glass and snow globe ornaments this week and we're also happy to share this simple DIY with you as well: silver glitter ornaments. The perfect tree or mantle adornment, these gems add a dash of sparkle and magic during this season.

You'll need: glass ornament balls {ours are from Michael's} | Elmer's glue | large grade silver glitter | a brush | ribbon

What to do: brush the glue onto the ornament in quarters {we tried painting the entire sphere at once but it got a little messy} and roll and sprinkle glitter onto the glue. Let dry on a cookie rack or atop a glass and proceed with the remaining quarters.

Once all covered, slip an 8" piece of ribbon {holding the ends together} through the hole of the ornament's top. Pull through and loop the ribbon around itself, pulling as you go. There you have it: glittering festive loveliness!

Bring some holiday cheer to the next party you make an entrance at and the hostess will be ever-so-grateful to receive the handmade holiday sweetness.

Recent Press: Lavender and Lemon Inspiration

Although the days are crisper, festive holiday music piped everywhere you turn, and the darker days of winter upon us, we're busy plotting and planning spring and summertime weddings and events {amidst prep for client holiday parties and winter weddings!}. It's funny how the planning process works: dreaming up bright and airy ideas when you just want to cozy up in front of a roaring fire!

Last summer, when the days were long and hot and the smell of perfumed lavender filled the air, we collaborated with our sweet friend Brenda from Best Wedding Sites to bring to life her idea for a charming lavender field inspirational shoot. We're so excited to see the shoot come to life and grace the pages of the current issue of Bridal Guide Magazine {yahoo!} in a beautiful three-page spread! If you haven't picked up your copy yet it's the January/February issue on stands now everywhere! It will surely get you dreaming up chic and lovely ideas for your wedding parties and decor.

This shoot was designed as an afternoon bridal shower and has us dreaming of warm summer afternoons spent visiting and enjoying good company. We played off of natural elements like the sea of rich lavender, highlights of lemon, and clouds of billowy white hydrangea.

Our dessert spread consisted of vanilla bean cupcakes with butter cream frosting, malt balls for a nostalgic feeling, homemade chocolate chip cookies, blueberry scones, and apple pie.

We told readers "when it came to creating our color palette, we played off the prevailing violet tones of the surrounding meadow, using high-contrast pops of lighter shades like fresh lemon yellow and pure white, along with neautral linen and burlap tones."

Brenda's delightful stationery was the perfect finishing touch. She provided recipe-type cards for guests to write their well wishes to the bride. Sweet sentiments that she can cherish forever.

Our talented friend Shannon from Shannon Lee Images captured the details for us in a stunning way. She has such an eye!

What we love: the effortlessly playful bursts of yellow and the laid-back atmosphere with touches of classical elegance like our scalloped French plates and vintage candlesticks.

We spent some much-needed time truly relaxing and soaking up the holiday festivities and decking the halls; it was wonderful! As the holidays edge even closer we're marching on with our weekly 2012 wedding trend prediction.

2012 wedding trend prediction No. 4: living installations. More and more so our couples are concerned about the reuse of their flowers from the big day. We always encourage them to donate the leftover blooms to a nursery home or hospice care as they can truly brighten the day for so many. We're predicting installations of long-living plants and adornments that will live on and can be given to guests when they leave or a nursing home recipient. They can also be planted at the newlyweds' home and be a constant reminder of the magic of the wedding day.

What we love: Living orchids and air plants can be the perfect delicate touch and pop of tropical romance. Not only are the gorgeous, but you can gift the plants to guests as they leave as a token of your celebration.

With the holidays having snuck up upon us once again, I thought I’d share with you some ideas for entertaining pieces you might want to include in your registry. As I’ve mentioned here before, I generally recommend that your registry reflect your everyday living needs, but entertaining may be a part of your lifestyle, or you intend for it to be.

So, as you build your gift registry, consider including a few special pieces – serving bowls and platters, or some crystal barware - that have the style and quality to stand out at special occasions, but also the versatility for everyday use, even if that’s just serving as a complement to your home décor.

For your table, you can never go wrong with classic white dinnerware – like the little black dress, it can be dressed up or down for any occasion: as is for everyday, and with a colorful charger, placemat or napkin rings to add a little color for a dinner party. Crystal is also a great thing to consider – a set of nice wine goblets, or just a decanter, will add a great touch of elegance to any table and there are a ton of wonderful options out there, from the classic cuts to more modern styles.

Thanksgiving. The holiday that surrounds us with feasts for the eyes and taste buds and allows for us to spend days on end enjoying our families and friends and food and drink without explanation or need to check email or social media. This Thanksgiving we're ever-so-grateful for our families and for our industry. You allow us to do what we love and provide support and encouragement that speak volumes. A huge part of what we do is bring special couples' vision to life when creating their weddings - and for this we're also thankful.

When we talk about wedding trends and our predictions we try to focus on the big picture: the elements that help create and entire wedding experience and not simply one or two pieces or a color {though we'll throw a few of those your way, too}. Our first and second 2012 predictions spoke to that, as does No. 3.

Prediction No. 3: Romance. That's what weddings are all about, right? Well in 2012 we predict a shift back towards utterly romantic floral designs, especially in bridal bouquets. Think lush blooms, deeply textured bouquets, and monochromatic colors that are timeless and nod to Hollywood nostalgia: think roses and brooches adorned with pearl drops and glittering gems and hand-dyed whimsical feathers; the elements that will make a bride's look stand out as one of timeless elegance.

Inspiration. You know that while we're suckers for fun whimsical designs coastal elegance strikes our fancy in a big way. It's a timeless platform for beautiful weddings and events: from sailboat-inspired stripes to navy and white color tones with bright pops of yellow, coastal elegance makes for magical events and sophisticated bashes that radiate fun. For the Best of San Diego Magazine bash we created a table top inspired by classic American coastal elegance. We looked to seersucker fabric and navy for our inspiration and brought in simple, yet striking details.

What we love: the abundance of delicious mini morsels from Fantasy Frostings and the beautiful blue hues in the flowers from Grand Floral.

Our linen table cloth is something we'll be seeing more of: linen is making more of a statement at weddings as the lightweight fabric can be less expensive to rent than frilly fanciful linens and makes the perfect blank canvas.

Our striped stationery by Brightly Designed was the perfect compliment: sunshine yellow bars alongside sweet navy text.

Our napkin adornments were simple as well, yet looked so beautiful and cheery: seersucker fabric bands!

2012 Wedding Trend Prediction No. 2

Dear blog friends, we are so happy to be back after our unexpected {and unwanted} hiatus last week and thrilled you joined us this morning to say hi! As we edge closer to 2012 we're rolling along with our wedding trend predictions {last week No. 1 predicted gourmet tasting-style menus and last year's trends for 2011 - how do you think we did?}.

Trend No. 2: We predict the rise of hometown destination weddings. Think about planning your wedding at a beautiful rustic mountain lodge equally gorgeous in the summertime, crisp fall months, or snowy winter just outside of your city or a gorgeous seaport a ferry ride away. Encourage all of your guests to stay for the weekend and celebrate.

What we love about this: your wedding will feel like a great escape but without the sometimes hefty travel bill of a far off destination wedding in a tropical locale or foreign country. Perhaps most importantly, by thinking outside of your city by just an hour or two you can strike it lucky with a stunning backdrop for your wedding you might not otherwise have.

2012 Wedding Trend Prediction No. 1

It's so hard to believe that we're so close to ringing in a new year, isn't it? Wow. This year has been a fantastic whirlwind but we're excited to welcome a fresh year. It's already looking incredible and we're ever-so grateful! With a new year comes new ideas to share with clients that will make their event truly one-of-a-kind.

Last year we called out our predictions for both 2011 and 2012. One of our favorites: the groom's lounge. We've seen so many variations this year and we know it's something that's going to stick around.

Our first prediction to reveal for 2012: tasting menus. Our couples are all so unique and often times a traditional buffet or plated meal doesn't cut it! More of our couples are going with mouth-watering tasting menus where their guests are greeted with an amuse bouche, duos of fresh local salads, palate cleansers, and several entrees that are portioned to smaller sizes. Cheese courses can be served up last, reminiscent of European dining.

What we love about a tasting menu: guests really get to enjoy the true dining experience and the couple can show off their favorite foods and wine pairings. Mix it up even more by serving some of the dishes family-style in smaller portions, like this fantastic cheese board.

Fall-Inspired Stationery

How is your Thursday morning so far? We're in full prep mode for tomorrow's gorgeous wedding at Tower 23 Hotel in San Diego {check out the hotel - it's so unique!}, and working on the finishing touches: gourmet cookie bags for late-night snacks, a gorgeous copper arbor Nick made for the ceremony, and little air plant take-home favors! We're also hoping and praying that we don't need to implement our Plan B - a huge storm is barreling our way! In over 8 years of event in Seattle we've never had to use a back-up plan and we hope to not start tomorrow!

Needless to say, it's still going to be gorgeous. Now onto the paper eye candy:

A Stylishly Chic Fete

Today we've got such a sweet treat for you! We just love sharing little bits of goodness from delightful people and their events. Today's soirêe was sent to us by the lovely Phebe from Making ME Event Planning Firm in Massachussets {check out her beautiful site and blog}. This stylish fête was in celebration of her 1 Year Business Birthday and she celebrated in style!

From Phebe {who's just gorgeous, by the way!}:

The party was a small wine and dessert party to celebrate my business turning 1 (I'm a wedding planner who also rents vintage place settings). Now that we're "all grown up now" and "fancy" I wanted to shower my friends and family with a vintage themed dessert and wine party. I didn't have to look far for all the vintage goodies and all were found at my fingertips around my house. I debuted many of my new vintage mismatched dessert plates and began to build my theme around delicate vintage china, shades of pink and brown, homemade/semi homemade desserts and WINE...of course!

We love: the sprinkling of pale pinks and blush tones against a white canvas and the thoughtful detailing throughout. {The desserts look positively scrumptious, too!}

Isn't this recipe card such a fun idea for a special celebration? Perfect for a milestone or anniversary or a wedding!

We're loving: the usage of doilies as a garland! What a fantastic idea that's so polished and sweet!

Be Inspired by Preston Bailey, Part II

How was your Halloween? Did you get spooked or spook trick-or-treaters?

We're happy to share Part II of our interview with Preston Bailey from our Fall EGlossy. Isn't he just so inspiring? He's also just such a wonderful person!

6. What do you love most about events and what you do?

What I love most is that each event is different. Each client is different. I am always facing exciting and new creative challenges.

7. You are a very busy man with events across the world! What keeps you energetic and going?
Exercise and meditation. I train for triathlons, which I love because I usually come up with my best ideas when I'm running, swimming or biking. Meditation helps me quiet my restless mind when life gets too loud.

8. During your years in the event industry what have you seen change both for better or worse? What can we all learn from that?

Our industry doesn't always work well together. Vendors need to collaborate with one another. Remember, when you're putting on an event with lots of other vendors, you're all on the same team. I think we forget that sometimes. The most important lesson, which I am still in the process of learning, is to learn not only your own craft but also have a thorough understanding of what all of the every vendors do. I'm not a wedding planner or a lighting designer, but I have spent a lot of time studying what wedding planners and lighting designers do. Now I can truly appreciate what they bring to the table and am better able to respond to their needs.

9. We had the great privilege of attending and visiting with you at your last book launch party for Celebrations in NYC. The setting and space was incredible! When you entertain and host events what do you focus on?

I use a very simple formula consisting of just two parts for my own events. First, I try to incorporate and stimulate all five senses. Second, I invite lots of amazing and talented people who may not otherwise cross paths with one another: it doesn't matter if you're gay, straight, rich, poor, cross-dressing or transgender! I love the special dynamic that happens when all these folks get to know each other a little better.

10. The last questions is: whatever you want it to be. Is there anything you want to tell or share with our readers?

Always remember that creativity is active. Set time aside every single day to create. That's the secret to success!

Happy Halloween, everyone! We hope your day is spooky and creepy and oh-so fun! We're so excited to share Part I from our interview with the incredibly inspiring and talented {and very kind} celebrity event designer and florist Preston Bailey from our Fall Eglossy. We're also sharing some scary Halloween recipes and projects at the end of the post! Without further adieu:

1. Creativity is everywhere if you look. Where do you draw your deepest breaths from and find inspiration at?

Most of my creativity comes from nature. There's nothing more dramatic that the abundance and beauty of Mother Nature. That being said, I'm always finding new things to be inspired by; I attended fashion week in Paris this year, and that was also incredibly inspiring. I know I'm not a clothing designer, but that doesn't mean I can't still be inspired by the amazing things they do. The cut of a jacket or the print of a skit just might inspire my next wedding table setting or centerpiece!

2. As a pioneer in weddings and events, what is the best sage advice you can pass along to aspiring businesses and artists? What about clients?

Always do business with your heart! (And never with greed.) Open yourself up to what feels right in your heart; if you do, you'll always be able to feel good about what yourself and your work.

3. Aside from your keen and incredible eye for design, what makes a Preston Bailey event so special?

I always try to create a feast for the senses. I want guests to be amazed and even a bit overwhelmed by the event. My goal is to transport guests into another world for a magical evening.

4. We'd love to hear your favorite story about a design you love or a special event that you still hold dear.

There is one special design that has had a tremendous impact on my business: Winter Wonderland. I created a winter wonderland wedding for Joan Rivers' daughter, Melissa Rivers, almost fifteen years ago. Clients still request winter wonderland for their own weddings. Melissa's wedding really was incredible, and I not only became close friends with her and Joan, but I also reached a whole new level of creation with winter wonderland. It was a wonderful time for me and for my work.

5. Can you please share a few fall and holiday entertaining decor tips that our readers can use at home?

Personally, I think the true heart of fall is the leaves. They're cost effective, colorful and plentiful. With just a bunch of leaves and a glue gun, you can create beautiful table runners and placemats. Or why not cover a simple, inexpensive basket with leaves and fill the basket with small pumpkins, squash and a candelabra for a gorgeous centerpiece? Let your imagination run wild. And when Christmas rolls around, do the same with pine cones!

It's Friday! As we enter into another weekend we're busy bees with client meetings {can't wait for this gorgeous Hotel Del Coronado wedding}, holiday party planning, and starting to work up stationery ideas for a few other couples.

With each and every couple of ours we stress the importance of the following before we get started:

--Remember that your wedding planning process should be fun and enjoyable. It marks the start of your adventure together so savor it.
--It's not a competition.
--It should be a reflection of you.
--Enjoy the process and if you become overwhelmed just take a break. Revisit the task when you've had time to take a step back.

The recipe is as simple as that.

Fun & Games:: a Thank You Party for Groomsmen

We're back with Part Deux of our dual shoot for the Fall issue of Exquisite Weddings Magazine and showing off Nick's concept: a thank you party for groomsmen. A fresh spin on the dusty bachelor party, why not show your guys you appreciate their years of friendship and support by throwing a fun and games night complete with beer flights, gourmet pizzas, and a late-night food truck? Consider using your own basement or home to recreate this idea and rent games like shuffleboard, a pretzel machine, and a jukebox from a local rental company {trust us, you'd be surprised at how realistic this can be}.

For this shoot Nick envisioned a comfortable space with funky elements like old leather couches, globes, and details that would keep the guys occupied and having fun. Beer tasting took center stage and micro brews were paired with delicious gourmet pizzas from Cucina Urbana.

Our friend Kate from Ruby and Willow created a manly installment in the form of a worn-style stationery suite with a vintage Italian motorcycle indicating for the gents to be prepared for a day of hanging out and enjoying the fun in life.

A separate sitting area acted as a cigar lounge and a relaxing element to the fun and games.

The abundance of small elements and rented games, paired with a creative backdrop, an abundance of delicious food and customized take-home brews made for the perfect thank you.

When planning your thank you bash contact a favorite food truck and see if they'll be near your home or location and can make a stop. What's more fun than having your own gourmet slider truck pull up in front?

A Chic Styled Party Just for the Girls

We're so excited to show off bonus images from our dual shoot for the new issue of Exquisite Weddings Magazine! If you haven't scooped up your copy, head to newsstands or order online! It's gorgeous and brimming with an abundance of inspiraiton eye candy!

We wanted to do something innovative {you know us} for our shoot and had the idea of creating both a girls' and guys' bash showcasing a fun party thrown by the bride and groom for their wedding parties. We know; not your typically bridal party shower. That's the point!

We worked with our lovely and oh-so talented pal Kate from Ruby & Willow in New Zealand to develop our fresh and sweet stationery suite for our bash. We indicated to come dressed in festive attire and the girls were greeted and pampered by amazing hair and makeup artists for a fun way to kick off the day.

Our setting was a blank concrete canvas in downtown San Diego: Culy Warehouse. Aleah designed a jewel-toned palette with a modern twist: think deep amethyst accents, sapphire velvet, and ornate detailing. We wanted it to feel as if the girls were enjoying a relaxed day in a chic living room: surrounded by beautiful crystal and vintage pieces.

The premise for the shoot was one of celebration. When planning your girly day set up several environments: we created a darling living room {complete with crocheted runners made by Aleah's great-grandma} with funky seating and over sized vintage chairs and a separate dining area for brunch and mimosas.

The activity of the day was a hands-on cake decorating class taught by Richard {and we say that with our best French accent}, a delightfully talented baker from France. Talk about the perfect {unexpected} activity for a day of fun. Your girls can decorate their own cakes and learn something they can use at home and take home scrumptious cake delights from the bash.

Our wonderfully talented friend Robin from Grand Floral went to town creating so many gems of floral arrangements that were cheery and ethereal.

The contrast of rich emerald green and a vibrant orange and fiery apricot made for one stunning setting. Robin's attention to detail really shone through with the use of julep-style milk glass cups turned upside down to pedestal blooms and her creative burlap woven table runner. Love!

You'll have to come back tomorrow for bonus images from Nick's shoot {we must say that it's pretty amazing}; we had a delicious food truck on site for his shoot and our girls got to enjoy some of the delights!

Tabletop Elements: Rustic Dining Alfresco

We're easing into November, which means intimate settings will be more commonplace. Whether you're entertaining at home for the holidays or fine-tuning your beautiful Fall-inspired cozy wedding, run with charming elements when designing your tabletop to ensure your guests will be comfortable and sit and enjoy themselves all night.

For our Thanksgiving entertaining spread for the November issue of San Diego Magazine we designed an elegant, yet carefree, setting with a mix of modern silverware, burlap place mats, and vintage French ceramic places atop sage napkins. We paired these elements with a timeless vision in mind. When planning your place settings run with natural elements like papyrus, pine branches, and fruit to dress each place setting.

The result was a delightfully organic place setting and food that took center stage.

Married! A Rustic Waterfront Wedding

There's something that just gets us about weddings at sentimental locations. Our own wedding was at Aleah's parents' gorgeous home on the ocean on a tiny little island in Washington State and just meant so much. Whenever we go home to visit we're reminded of the amazing time that was had: our delicious food, our wonderful friends and family, the fantastic band that had us all dancing into the night, and the totally incredible atmosphere. There's no place like home!

Our couple Megan and Logan had a similar setting: a waterfront wedding at Megan's family cabin. Her parents spent the time to plant gorgeous blooms and natural elements, to create a beautiful ceremony backdrop, and a custom beer wall complete with specialty taps. The result was a rustic bash complete with a roaming dinner, a retro DJ, and a picture-perfect setting captured impeccably by the talented duo of Heather and Jon at One Love Photo.

Isn't Megan just a darling bride? Her short frock is the perfect reflection of her personality: charming and spunky and totally unique!

Most of the guests arrived via boat, which lent a truly nautical ambiance to the celebration.

Guests were greeted in a rustic pasture complete with a custom-built wooden bar where lemonade drinks were served up in glass boot mugs. What fun!

Yep. That's Aleah pulling the boat out in the extremely chilly water! Nick was the push-off-er from the beach and we worked with Heather and Jon to get that perfect shot.

That's it!

Megan's dad is so sweet and was just a little nervous for his toast. To make light of it he donned a silly disguise while he read it!

DIY: Stamped Burlap Place Mats

The holidays are edging nearer and Fall weddings are in full swing. Decorating for these festive soireés has never been easier. Use natural elements from Mother Nature like lichen-covered branches, acorns, and burlap to dress your table tops and balance rustic with elegant by using decorating goblets and fanciful china.

Perfectly rustic, our stamped place mat sets the framework for a festive dinner party and marks where your guest will be enjoying dinner and conversation. Monogram your place mats so they serve as double duty: pastoral décor and a seating assignment.

Stamped Burlap Place Mats

You'll need: burlap | fabric paint | vintage print press stamps | paint brush

To make:

1. Cut a piece of burlap to 12” x 10”

2. Lay burlap flat and choose your corner for the stamp. Paint a thick coat of paint on your stamps.

3. Carefully turn stamps over and lay 1/2” from the edge of your mat. Put pressure on each stamp. Remove and fill in any gaps in the paint with your brush.

What a fun project, isn't it? Dress up the burlap with silver or gold metallic paint for a Christmas table top or orange or brown for Thanksgiving.

Happy Tuesday, loves! What are you up to today? Well it's sure been absolutely beautiful back in Washington State these past few days. What a perfect way to get a dose of fall: ferry rides across the sound and the leaves are just turning from that pale golden to deep reds and fiery oranges. Last night Coho salmon was on the menu {talk about melt-in-your-mouth}, and the skies have been oh-so clear and the ocean just as smooth glass. Totally perfect!

DIY: Festive Curled Place Cards

Inspiration. We find it in the most random of places at times. We're always looking to be inspired; whether it's when we travel, out on walks, or from others. At our shoots and events people are always asking how in the heck we come up with our ideas. This one happened while we were prepping for our San Diego Magazine photo shoot for the December issue {stay tuned; we're sure you'll love it!}. We had strips of black paper ready for writing and we wanted them to have some sort of flourish. So Aleah had the inspired idea to put a French spin on the paper and make each place card a little curly work of art. Such a simple, yet festive flair.

You'll need:

black {or dark} paper cut to 8" in length by 1" in width | white ink pen | a pencil

Take your strips of paper and write guests' names towards the right-hand side with a curly and swirling hand.

Take the left end of the paper and secure it with your finger tightly to the middle of a pencil.

Carefully curl around and around a few times tightly until you reach the name.

Take your pencil out and voilà!

Aren't these perfect for a festive holiday bash or a darling wedding? We sure think so. :)

DIY: Metallic Painted Tin Can Vases

Despite it reaching 101 degrees in the heat wave for our day trip up to LA yesterday {so hot...the mild coast temperatures of 75 are perfect!}, the holidays are nearly here and we're getting into the spirit. I {Aleah} will be headed back home to Seattle this weekend for a nice bit of family time on my parents' island: cue my snuggly family Golden Retriever, Milo, my amazing parents, and fantastic brothers, relaxation, delicious food, and lounging. We're heading to a Fall farm dinner and a trip to hunt for chanterelles in the forest. I hope to score some rides on our scooters, too if it's not raining. YES! My dose of Fall will be complete!

For our Autumn EGlossy we had fun whipping up some really creative, yet effortless, entertaining ideas geared towards Fall. Our painted tin cans are festive and unique, while being completely easy to replicate for your holiday table or wedding table top. Envision dozens of beautifully painted tin cans overflowing with over sized buds and lovely textures. We know, right? What a gorgeous setting! It's amazing how something so ordinary can be turned into a delightful element!

Inspired! A Fun and Whimsical Carnival Shoot

How was your weekend, lovelies? With another week comes more inspired fun and today's inspiration shoot is the perfect way to kick it off! We've got a bunch of goodness coming your way including our Fall EGlossy and some fabulous holiday inspiration - we're diving right in!

From Monica Pradel at Eventity Inc.: With the summer season gone, Eventity Inc wanted to capture the summer feel with a carnival themed wedding. Our idea for this theme was to make it a "backyard wedding" and we believe we hit the mark. From the bright colors of the plates to the many colors on the menu to the DIY factor of the florals and candy containers. Of course, the carnival theme for a wedding can be captured at any season here in Southern California because we always have sunny weather.
Indeed, a festive and cheery carnival theme can be applied to so many celebrations during any season. Whip up a Halloween bash with spooky carnival details in a black, gray, and brown motif for something haunting. Or dress up your home for the holidays with a vintage-esque carnival look: think striped ornaments, an old fashioned sweets buffet for your holiday party, and darling cakes dressed up in red and white stripes.

I {Aleah} am also mapping out some fun and games for a trip back home to Seattle later this month. I'll be attending a farm dinner {cannot wait!} at Mystery Bay Farm with my family, and enjoying some island time in true fall fashion. I was thrilled earlier this week when it rained in San Diego - for about a day - but then it blew out as fast as the clouds rolled in. Counting the days until I can pull out my festively fall coats and new boots!

This afternoon we're busy bees shooting our New Year's Eve bash for San Diego Magazine - another tiny {we mean really tiny} peek into what we're up to. Wedding Wednesday Planning Tips: The Bar

This morning is already one of those mornings: the sand in the hourglass is not on our side. It's filtering through oh-so quickly, leaving us scurrying to tackle our To Do List quickly! But we're excited for what this week has consisted of so far and for what's to come....stay tuned! Now onto some cocktail and bar talk:

More often than not the bar becomes a bit of a bone of contention. We educate our couples prior to booking their venue or catering service that the food and beverage minimum is just that: a minimum. We've heard horror stories of couples that book a venue anticipating that their wedding catering costs will cost, for example, $15,000 plus taxes and gratuity. However, your budget can greatly exceed this if your guest count grows. Before you sign on the dotted line, get an inflated estimate to account for any overages, and estimate a more middle-of-the-road menu {some venues will provide you with an estimate based on the least expensive menu items to get you in the door}.

Once you determine your precise number of guests and how that works into your budget, you can hammer down the extras like hors d' oeuvres, palate cleansers, desserts, and everything in between. To most couples the bar is what can really add up, considering one glass of wine can run between $12-20 or a cocktail $15 - that can tally and deplete your budget so quickly. So trim it with these simple tips that will allow for you to show your guests the royal {delicious} treatment without skipping a beat.

Greet your guests with sparkling water and skip the champagne. One of the simplest ways to save several hundred dollars, sparkling water served in goblets garnished with cucumber or lemon wedges {we can't say this enough!} is a delightful way to welcome guests to your ceremony. They won't miss the champagne and your wine for an hour, and your check book will thank you!

Check out the corkage fees and determine if supplying your own wine through a distributor or your local wine cellar will equate to less than the bottles of wine you'd choose from the catering list.

Close down your bar during dinner. Trust us, your guests won't miss this {and if they do, they can survive} and no one will be getting up and down during your gourmet dinner to grab a cocktail. Rather, serve wine table side: not only does it add to the experience, but it can slash costs. That hour or so can save you immensely.

Toast with cocktail in hand. While we're suckers for a classic champagne toast, it's not for every wedding. Know your guests and whether they'll actually drink their champagne passed their way or would prefer to sip on what they have in hand. If you don't think it will be missed, skip this line item and see your cost reduce by up to $15 per guest.

With those simple tips you can repurpose several thousand dollars towards your menu, gorgeous , or entertainment.

Monday, Monday. How was the first weekend of October for you? Ours was productive but it was over before we knew it! We decided to plan a day trip out to Julian soon; we hear it's San Diego's best dose of Fall complete with golden leaves, apple cider, and cooler weather! We're also wrapping our head around some decadent ideas for Fall and holiday entertaining and wanted to share a delightful new type of post with you: elements.

Married! A Beautifully Sunny California Wedding

As we grow closer to the weekend {and the 1st of October?!} we're in a tizzy of beautiful client details and design ideas, excitement of several sorts, and the week that was. This past week was fantastic and lovely and, once again, flew by too quickly. But we are excited to share an extra-sweet wedding with you today. Because we think you're swell...

While every wedding has that sparkle and something that just makes us happy, today's wedding makes us smile. Big. It's sunny, cheery, happy, and just so darned lovely!

What we love the most: The TOMS!

From the glowing bride Emily: Before I knew it the big day came and it was more amazing then I could have ever dreamed it to be. It's so cliché, but that day truly was the best day of my life. I’ve never enjoyed myself so much and felt so happy and loved.

My favorite part of that day was at the end. Nick and I were the only ones left besides the coordinator from the venue and the staff that were cleaning up.

The coordinator started to play the CD Nick and I made as favors, which was a compilation of our favorite love songs. As we were gathering up our last few things we heard the music and started to slow dance.

It was seriously like a scene out of a movie, there we were, dancing in the middle of this brightly lit room as people around us are folding up table cloths, taking down lights, and rolling tables away, yet it felt like it was just me and him alone in that room. It was so incredibly romantic, and the perfect end to the perfect wedding.

An Open Letter to Brides & Grooms

As a flurry of newly engaged couples prepare to tie the knot in the coming months, we lend this advice to you:

Absolutely enjoy the planning process. We know that it can be stressful and tiring but work together to make it fun and an adventure. After all, the planning process is a jump into what married life will be like: working together and facing challenges but seeing a beautiful reward at the end of the challenge.

Plan your wedding for you. Over the years we have seen stresses injected into the planning process due to family pressure and work with our couples to curb that. Whether it's pressure of a date because Aunt Sofie can't make August 1st or location because Cousin Phil can't travel, plan your wedding for you. The bottom line is that it's your day and your celebration and you simply can't please everyone. Of course, you'll plan a thoughtful wedding with a delicious menu, activities for guests, and details that will create an experience for them, but don't let pressures of others influence what you do.

Your wedding is not a competition. We have said this many times and will say it again. Your wedding should be just that: your wedding, and not a mirror of your best friend's wedding or a one-up of your sister's wedding. We've heard many a client say "at Maggie's wedding they did ____ ." There's a difference between taking learning lessons from something you liked or didn't like at a wedding and wanting to make yours bigger or better. The beauty of couples is that each is different and your celebration should reflect that.

Inspiration is everywhere and seek it out together. Planning your wedding together can be incredibly fun and, especially when you make it that way! Take walks together, watch a slide show of your trips, and snap pictures of what inspires you both on crisp fall afternoon downtown. Store front displays, restaurant tiles, or even food trucks can lend wonderful inspiration to your wedding. Just open your eyes and mind and look for it. You might just be surprised at what your spouse-to-be likes or is inspired by!

Pipe in your personalities. Your wedding is the perfect time to let loose and paint the canvas to look as you want it to. Pipe in your personalities with creative invitations, a funky cocktail hour menu, unexpected ceremony music, or late-night entertainment that will surprise your guests. Go all out with putting your stamp on your big day by creating an experience, but be careful to stay cohesive by sticking to on underlying palette or vision.

However you plan your wedding, remember that it's a whirlwind. The planning process is a blizzard of cake samples, flower names, textile swatches, and guest lists. But if you slow down and savor those bites, make a game out of your guest list, and enjoy the colors and ideas swirling about you'll surely remember the planning process as an incredible time and the start of your new beautiful journey together.

We are working on designs for some charming and romantic fall weddings with perhaps some unexpected palettes {much like in today's real wedding}. Our clients are utilizing lush color combinations and textures to paint a beautiful wedding picture - think deep berry shades with pops of chartreuse, garnet and velvety navy blues, and warm chocolates paired with tan and camel. Today's real Mississippi wedding is not only beyond sweet, but the color wheel of pewter, lime, tangelo, and lemon is dramatic and just right. Enjoy!

Business Musings: Welcoming Fall

We've made it to a new season, friends! Fall has swirled in at the coast in a cooler, cloudy burst and we're really enjoying it! With fall comes a new business outlook and a sense of freshness and Fall cleaning. What better time than the changing of seasons to do some deep cleaning and organizing before we really settle in?

Here's what we'll be doing this weekend:
Recycling magazines. Such a difficult thing to do for Aleah but a must, we accumulate so many wedding, lifestyle, and food magazines every month. We read through each and tear out articles or recipes that inspire us or we like for our clients and then file away in a notebook. We put the rest on the seawall along the boardwalk for tourist to take for their beach read.

Organizing our calendar. Our calendar is already filled a few months out this fall with industry events, photo shoots, and client meetings and work so organizing and scheduling time to just do nothing is really important. A day trip to Julian to enjoy some apple cider, a weekend back home in Seattle, and lunch or happy hour with friends are key to ensuring our fall is fun.

Creating a new fall receipt file and ledger. Keeping our business receipts organized by quarter makes reconciling much easier and it makes finding purchases a breeze.

Brushing up on social media. Social media is such a fantastic tool and we love the connections we meet, the opportunities discovered, and what it has done for our business. But it can also be overwhelming. There seems to be an account for everything: Klout, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Google +, and on and on. We'll be taking a look at what we truly use often and better it. Analyzing stats and brainstorming ideas. We'll be trimming those that we don't use.

Wedding Planning Tips: Overly Fragrant Blooms

The other day we put out a Tweet that was quickly passed around and Retweeted {thank you!}: Steer clear of overly fragrant blooms in your table centerpieces. They can bother guests and compete with your menu.

The same can be said for scented candles: there's nothing worse than triggering an asthma or allergy attack for one of your guests or distracting from your thoughtful dinner menu. We went to our friend Robin Dietsch of Grand Floral in San Diego, an incredibly talented florist and designer, for her take on the matter:

Stargazer Lilies and Casa Blanca Lilies are beautiful but heavily scented and should be avoided for low centerpieces where they will eclipse any of the yummy food fragrance wafting across the table! In a large ballroom with high ceilings they can be used gingerly in a mass arrangement. They work well in altar arrangements for churches or outside ceremony settings as the breeze will spread the fragrance around.

Perhaps steer clear of these:

For Spring flowers Narcissus is the big culprit (Paper whites are Narcissus). Daffodils are also in the Narcissus family but do not have a scent so they are a good substitute and are just the bright yellow, they are lovely paler tones which will work well with Bridal work.

Hyacinth are the other heavily scented Spring flower. The colors are yummy and appealing but hydrangea, freesia, ranunculus and roses come in similar colors and can be used as substitutes.

And substitiute with these:

The Gift of Warmth

Brrr...fall is upon us which means {in most areas} the riding boots come out, coffee gets hotter, and extra blankets keep us warm on crisp nights.

We always encourage our couples to prepare to take great care of their guests whether it's warm, chilly, raining, or snowing and whether they're entertaining at home or at their wedding. From small details like champagne and tray passed water upon entry to the seating and music to full delectable well-thought out seasonal menus, incredible music, and entertainment, your guests are there to celebrate you. Make sure that in turn they feel well taken care of and treated to a truly amazing celebration.

This can be as simple as gifting the ladies in attendance the gift of warmth. Rolled shawls passed on silver trays are affordable, sweet, and a great keepsake they can also use when dancing the night away at your bash. Don't forget the gentlemen, too - send them away with a tasty treat they can enjoy: a small nip of whiskey, a hand-rolled cigar, or a brown paper bag of freshly fried mini doughnuts topped with a sprinke of powdered sugar. Delish!
